Tutor feedback on Assignment 1 and 3D Paper style reattempt of ASS 1

After receiving my feedback I was happy with what my tutor had said about areas of my work. I now know that I need to stick to my style, explore the possibilities more and produce fresh ideas with the medium of paper.

     I have decided that my Final assignment piece was good but was not my true style. So I decided to create it again but this time using a paper medium to create the scene.

Here below are some process shots:



I found a box which I could build up my scene into, I chose colour that were bright and complimented each other. I started looking at the layers and working out how to make this illustration work.


Here above is the background stuck in ready to have the spider web like city build upon it.


For the spider web city I have used string and stuck it together. My idea is to hang paper cut out buildings and accessories on the string to form the city.



   Here above is my finished second attempt of my City between two mountains. I am very happy with it. it is bright and happy and would make a great illustration for a children version of the story. I also took a photo and put it in photo shop to add extra bits and tidy the work up (above)

    Overall I am happy that i attempted to remake the city in my paper form and I am so happy how my paper style is coming alone. i really want to attempt some stop start motion effects at some point and also maybe have the confidence to remove the box and actually create the scenes totally in 3D.

     I also want to sketch a lot more. In the feedback I got I felt I have gone a bit rusty with just good old sketching, latley i have been so excited about creating everything out of paper that i forget to find time to sketch. I knew this already deep down and I need to do something so that it can help me with proportions, perspective, compositions. With this, I can then use it to input into my paper style. So I am going to make it so that I draw something every day. There is also a local group of Dudley artists who meet up on a Wednesday evening and I am going to meet up with them as they do a lot of life drawing and practice. I am hoping I will get to know people better and get some tips etc with there wisdom and see other peoples styles. It will be nice to be in a group of people who also love art too.

   I have also began to collect pieces of work in a scrapbook that I admire along with business cards, book pages and posters. I have already built up quite a collection and its great to look in to get some inspiration and look as some of the art work out there that I admire.

   With doing my pet portraits, my paper stationery, my degree and working for two companies,  I have had a lot going on. I have decided to drop the paper stationery small business I had and just have my degree and my portraits to concentrate on. I hope this helps me to become more balanced and focused so I can concentrated on the two things that are important to me.

I am also going to look around and visit some galleries for inspiration too. Hopefully, it will help me experiment further.

ASS3 - Project 2 Image and Text

Research Point     Kafka’s short story The Metamorphosis (Die Verwandlung), first published in 1915, is a strongly visual tale of a man called Gregor who wakes up one day to find himself transformed into a beetle. The story then explores how Gregor and his parents deal with this transformation. The Metamorphosis is set in Gregor’s bedroom in his parents’ house, and the door of the room becomes an important visual metaphor for being trapped.  Research how different illustrators have tackled this story.
