Exercise: Mixing and matching Working around the theme of ‘hybrid’ Task: Create a series of illustrations using the following processes: Starting on paper and moving to a computer, follow this process: Draw - scan - colour Starting on the computer and then moving to paper, follow this process: Colour - print - draw Are there other combinations of mixing and matching digital and analogue (non-digital) ways of working you can identify and try out? Reflect on whether these processes have offered you something new or unexpected.    For this exercise, I am going to be experimenting and looking how I can mix traditional art with digital art. Tthe first thing I have to do is decide on a theme of a hybrid which I have just randomly thought of mixing a few animals together: a seahorse a cat and a butterfly. What I'm going to do now is draw out this creature I have in my mind and for the first part of this exercise draw it out in a fine liner, scan it into the computer and th...

My Own experiment - Watercolour and ink practice Today I have experimented with watercolours, creating random shapes with the paint and then once dry I have doodled on top of them using ink. It was fun to just be a bit free and draw from my imagination. I discovered that the colours go lighter once dried and they work well as a base for adding colour to line art. colour. Exercise: Draw, draw and draw again   Task:  Pick some reference material to draw from, perhaps a single photograph with a figure and some other details. It could be a photograph you’ve taken or one you’ve found. Draw what’s in the photograph – the figure, their expression, their clothes, the setting. Try and record all the information from the photograph in your drawing. Now, draw it a second time but do it quicker. Pick out the important elements in the image and focus your drawing on these. Leave out the information that is less important. Put the original photograph away and draw it again,...

Research - World of illustration ‘who’s out there and what are they doing? Britney Lee        Britney Lee is an illustrator I have been following for a year or so now. She is an artist based in the USA who works for Disney. As well as animation for Disney, she also creates her own art with the use of paper. She creates art by making characters out of paper and making prints of them to sell whether its calendars, on t-shirts or other stationary ideas. As well as this she also sells originals if people are really into her style. For Disney, she has helped to create the sisters Anna and Elsa in Disneys Frozen film and many more. I am attracted to her style as her characters stand out. When I look at the work I can see her talking through her work and I love her use of colours. She knows what colours work together really well, whether its to create a mood or make you feel like you know the characters personality. I love her ideas and...
